Green Queen’s ethos is to encourage, support and inspire all those souls out there who want to live a greener, cleaner, kinder life.
The idea for Green Queen began a few years ago. I had recently become green-ified and I was attempting, with great difficulty, to find greener products in my hometown of Hong Kong. It wasn’t easy, and those around me thought me mostly ridiculous. Putting together an organic meal meant going to 3 supermarkets and 2 health food shops. Replenishing my bathroom products meant traveling 45 minutes on the subway to find eco-friendly shampoo. Cleaning our apartment meant convincing A Dearest that paying an extra 30% more for what seemed like nothing more than lemon and water was in fact going to save our lungs! Feeling mostly alone on my new journey but convinced that there were others like me out there, I wanted to create a green Hong Kong listing so that people would know where to shop.
As I became more and more interested in living the green life (and Hong Kong’s green consciousness awakened!), I became an avid consumer of green information everywhere: books, magazines, websites, blogs, newspapers, product brochures. I realized that there is so much quality information everywhere. But it is often overwhelming to comb through it. It requires a massive commitment which frankly, most of us just aren’t all that willing to make.
One of my favourite websites in the whole world, and one that I visit multiple times a day, is Slate Magazine (www.slate.com). I love it because it provides me with intelligent, opinionated, thoughtful news editorial by exceptional writing talent from all over the world. Instead of reading boring, stodgy newspapers, I read Slate. It keeps me informed; it helps me think about current news topics from a different angle; it provides me with the required facts to engage in considered, rational discussions about contemporary issues. I don’t need to read 10 different news sites. Slate curates the news for me.
My hope is that Green Queen will do the same for you regarding all things green, sustainable, organic and eco-friendly. I spend all my time acquiring green information. Despite your best intentions, you may not have the luxury of time to do so. Green Queen wants to change that. In a nutshell, Green Queen is the link between YOU and the big Green World. I fully expect to offer bait to all kinds of audiences. Green Queen aims to be as relevant to a new mummy who wants to green her baby’s life, as to a budding eco-preneur looking for savvy green business trends, and everyone in between.
For Hong Kong readers (and visitors!), Green Queen also provides a useful green guide to Asia’s World City with information about how to make more informed choices in food, fashion, furnishings and more!
The one thing Green Queen will never be (I hope!) is preachy. Each of us has a unique lifestyle with its own sets of trials and tribulations. Not all mothers have the luxury of feeding their baby entirely organic food. Not everyone can afford to install solar panels on their roof. We can’t all realistically bike to work. But we can be kinder to ourselves and others. We can make small efforts to live cleaner. We can educate ourselves intelligently about issues threatening the sustainable future of our planet. We can make spending choices that better reflect our integrity. Green Queen will hold your hand through all of it!
