Green Queen’s Last Minute Xmas Food Guide 2013

5 Mins Read

Only a few more days until it is officially Christmas but really only 1 more day until most of us take time off and enjoy the holiday festivities. Spending time with family and friends is the best part of course, right after stuffing your face with delicious holiday food & drink! For the super green procrastinators amongst you, below is a quick guide of where to buy what at this very last minute.

Meat & Fish & Veg

Best place to grab a green turkey at this late date, try Tenderloin Fine Foods online or the Meat Market HK (who have just opened a brand new shop on Mosque Street by the Mid Levels escalator) for organic and hormone/antibiotic free options. The Porterhouse, also online, has heritage free range and organic turkeys too. Only a few left though so hurry!

Looking for some organic, wild or preservative-free smoked salmon to serve your guests pre-dinner? Try TasmaniaFresh or South Stream Seafoods online.

Need additive-free, handmade sausages for Christmas brekkie? We love The Sausage Co– made right here in Hong Kong with locally grown antibiotic & hormone-free pork. They have many flavors and all are delicious and so fresh.

Most of the organic vegetable delivery services are done until the New Years but get yourself to Island East Markets at Taikoo Place this Sunday and pick up local organic produce from their large selection of farmers. You can also head to the Central Star Ferry Farmers Market  on the first floor of Pier 7 (also on Sunday) for a smaller but equally lovely local organic veg selection.

Desserts

tai tai pecan

What about dessert? Grab a perfect pie from The Ultimate Pie Guy Tai Tai Pie Pies, they have anything you might need: pecan pie, apple pie, pumpkin pie, chocolate pie- anything you can dream up really! They have just opened their first shop in Wan Chai and you can also order online. Po’s Atelier has a great artisanal homemade stollen available at their shop in Po Hing Fong. Don’t forget to head to Choice Cooperative if you need gluten-free goodies. They newly launched GF bakery and cafe is all anyone is talking about these days! They have over 10 different kinds of gluten-free breads as well as muffins, cookies and other sweet goodies. Ideal for those of us with special diets. Lastly, can’t forget to mention Happy Cow Dairy Free Ice Cream– loved by kids and adults alike! They have great festive flavors like Chai Tea, Maple and Cinnamon Caramel Swirl. For stockists, check their website.

Want to bake your own organic dessert? Best place in town for everything you need from organic eggs & butters to every possible type of flour available and an array of sweeteners, head to one of Just Green‘s four shops- they are in Central, Wan Chai, Discovery Bay and on Lamma Island.

Drinks

What is Christmas without some warming vino? Get the green stuff at La Cabane a Vin who exclusively source boutique organic, biodynamic and sulfite-free wines, visit their Hollywood Road shop (or meet for drinks at their bar). They have the best selection in town though they specialize in French varietals. For Australian organic wines, try Purple 9 Wine online. The Vineyard has a selection of organic and vegan Italian wines too. They have a shop in North Point or you can get what you need online.

Prefer hoppy fizzy beer to wine? We have some great suggestions for craft beer aficionados: order online at Beer Necessities and Beerhound or visit the HK Brewcraft shop in Central- they also sell home brew kits for the DIY amongst you.

Going Out

Prefer to go out to eat and looking for a meat-free option? Grassroots Pantry has you covered with delicious vegan, gluten-free friendly menus for the 24th, the 25th and the 31st. Check here for menu and timing details. Another great vegetarian choice is The Herbivores who are also offering Christmas menus on all three days. IPC Foodlab also has some holiday menus with local organic ingredients and vegetarian menu choices. For a gourmet luxe option, book at award winning Cafe Gray Deluxe at The Upper House Hotel. Chef Joey Sergentakis (one of our Green Queen Heroes, read our interview with him here) has put together fabulous Christmas menus- a real treat for the whole family.

They have just launched a fantastic line of organic dry goods and they are doing hampers that include organic snack bars, organic gluten-free cookies and along with lovely organic teas and handmade soaps. For lovely vegan homemade treats, order a Green Vitamin hamper box. They include organic vegan coconut dome cookies, organic cranberry jam and raw vegan organic kale chips. All are packaged beautifully so you don’t have to do anything but order and watch the lucky recipient enjoy their package.
