Where To Find Hong Kong’s Best Vegan Pizzas

4 Mins Read

Ooey, gooey, and deliciously cheesy pizza…Who doesn’t love it? For vegans and those on dairy-free regimes, it’s one of the hardest dishes to give up. Until recently, plant-based pizzas in Hong Kong were mostly cheese-less. Not exactly scratching that itch. But thanks to advances in the alternative dairy market and Hong Kong’s vegan dining renaissance, a crop of delicious vegan pizzas have popped up across the city- here’s the complete list so you can get your plant-based cheesy fix.

Hemingway’s DB

If good ole comfort food is what you’re after, look no further than Hemingway’s DB. With seven vegan pizza options to choose from and a whole range of flavors to suit your fancy, there is a pizza for every craving. Something meaty?! Go for their Texan BBQ using pulled BBQ jackfruit loaded with peppers and mushrooms or their Key West pizza with vegan ham and pineapples. We personally love their Roast Veggie pizza with sun-dried tomato, eggplant and zucchini – yum!

Shop G09, Block A, 92 & 96 Discovery Bay Road, Discovery Bay Plaza, Lantau Island, +852 2987 8804, info@hemingways.hk.

Pop Vegan

The newest vegan joint to open up in Soho, we’re excited about the pizza offerings at Pop Vegan. Currently serving three plant-based pizzas and a truffle, mushroom and spinach calzone, the colorful Classic Four Seasons topped with cherry tomatoes, pumpkin, mushrooms, aubergine, and artichoke looks divine. They also have a tasty Buddhist-friendly, Chinese fusion Toona and Sesame Pesto with crunchy sliced zucchini (pictured above) free from garlic and scallions. Using Green Vie from Greece, diners who love the vegan cheese can also purchase the lactose-, soy-, gluten-, nut-, and palm oil free cheese at the retail area of the restaurant!

Pizza Veg

For a budget, no frills veggie pizza experience, look no further than Pizza Veg in Tuen Mun. A basic takeout shop with a few plastic tables and chairs, this vegetarian pizza place has been shaking up the monotony of boring veggie options since 2013! Vegan fan favorites (made with Daiya) include the Veggie Mexican with jalapeños, veggie beef, and colorful bell peppers, or the Hawaiian with pineapples and faux ham.

Pizza Express

UK-based pizza chain, Pizza Express, debuted their first plant-based pizza creations earlier 2019 at its Sai Ying Pun location with three different vegan pizzas on the menu: the thin and crispy Cavolo Verde featuring kale and black garlic, the truffle happy Trifolata, and veggie loaded Giardiniera with asparagus and roasted pumpkin- all pizzas use Daiya cheese.
The surprise: our all time favourite doesn’t even have cheese! But you’ll understand when you order the Kale & Mushroom flatbreat. Now more explanations needed, just try and tell. It is a-ma-zing.

Pizza Express Sai Ying Pun: G/F, Shop No 3, 5-6, Soho 189, 189 Queen’s Road West, Sai Ying Pun, +852 3164 1301.

Ed. Update: The exact vegan pizza options at Pizza Express Sai Ying Pun have changed so the Cavolo Verde is no longer available but they definitely have a few vegan cheese menu items.

Mayse Artisan Bakery Pizza

Vegan bakery and sourdough specialist Mayse Artisan Bakery, just launched a wildly popular “Pizza and Chill” vegan sourdough pizza popup series! Happening most Saturday or Sundays, father-daughter bread duo Alex and Elina’s past four pizza sessions have been sell-out successes. They also pop up at markets around town and offer a delivery service if you commit to a minimum order (not difficult since they are so delish).

Check their Facebook page for upcoming dates and menu updates.

The Vegvolution Kitchen

One of the first restaurants in the city to offer us a taste of tasty vegan cheese, The Vegvolution Kitchen has remained the standard when it comes to good vegan pizza. Using popular dairy-free Scottish cheese brand, Sheese, the Italian-inspired cafe offers five different kinds of vegan pies from a traditional Naples tomato and cheese to more exciting creations like their Curry Mango Devil Pizza.

3/F, 2 – 6 Fu Ming Street, Bo Ming Building, Causeway Bay, +852 6010 4487, veggiexpert@hotmail.com

March 2019 Update: The Vegvolution Kitchen has now closed.

Bonus: Vegan Pizza at Home

For the times you can’t eat out or wait for delivery, there’s the frozen pizza route. Before you get up in arms about the “cardboard box,” hear us out! Vegan cheese brand Daiya, makes a delicious frozen pie with a great crust to cheese ratio that doesn’t skimp on toppings. Filled with their popular dairy-free Mozzarella, Cheddar style shreds and other varieties, the crispy pizza is also gluten-free!

Available in the freezer section at Just Green and Green Common.
