Where To Eat: Guide To Vegan & Vegetarian Food In New Territories

You might be surprised at the slew of vegan and vegetarian restaurants and cafés located in the New Territories – in fact, there’s plenty of great plant-based hotspots to discover. If you’re feeling like a local Chinese takeaway or dim sum snack – sans meat – you’re in luck. Looking for more international options? You’ll also find some real finds. Below, Green Queen’s complete list to eating vegan and vegetarian from Tsuen Wan to Tseung Kwan O.

Loving Nature

Loving Nature is beloved local vegan chain LN Fortunate Coffee’s sister branch in New Territories. The homey café a wide variety of completely plant-based dishes, from noodle soups to burgers and sandwiches. Popular picks from the menu also include vegan sushi and “chicken” satay skewers. Almost everyone finishes their meal off at Loving Nature with dessert – the ladies at the café serve up fingerlicking chestnut cake, black forest cake topped with strawberries and waffles with ice cream. Depending on when you visit, there will be festive delicacies like rice dumplings, mooncakes or Chinese New Year themed desserts.

TT Veggie

TT Veggie is a newcomer to Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST), offering students and the public affordable and delicious vegetarian and vegan options. The menu is predominantly made up of Chinese dishes, but it is extensive, so there is something for everyone: from rice sets to noodles, dim sum and all-day breakfasts. While not everything on the menu is vegan-friendly, as this restaurant does serve egg, most of what they offer is 100% plant-based.

Address: TT Veggie, LG7 Kitchen 3, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Clear Water Bay. Open Monday – Saturday: 11.00am – 9.00pm. Closed Sunday.

A Mi Tuo Fo Su Xin Yuan

A Mi Tuo Fo Su Xin Yuan (阿彌陀佛素心園) is an all-vegan, crowdfunded Buddhist restaurant and tea room. Located in Kwai Chung, the volunteer-run eatery serves up traditional Buddhist-style vegan dishes – think wood ear mushrooms, okra, lotus root and seitan – and exquisite Chinese tea. Stop by for a quick bite if you’re in for something local and casual.

Joie Plant-Based Bistro

In the heart of Tsuen Wan is Joie Plant-Based Bistro, a rustic looking Western-Japanese fusion restaurant serving up completely vegan pizzas, pastas, soups and salads. They also offer desserts like cupcakes and cookies – all made from plants!

Casphalt

Casphalt is a part café, part community art space located in West New Territories. Their quaint café serves up beautifully plated vegetarian fusion food, with lots of vegan options as well. Calling themselves a community “backyard” or “garden”, it’s worth visiting Casphalt with a couple of friends to hang out and enjoy quiche and coffee in their open courtyard space.

Address: Casphalt, Ching Leung Nunnery, Tuen Fu Road, Tuen Mun, New Territories. Open weekdays (except Wednesday): 2.00pm – 7.00pm; and Weekends: 11.00am – 7.00pm. 

Goodnuts

Goodnuts is a Chinese vegetarian corner eatery, well-known for its veggie dim sum lunch boxes and desserts for takeaway and delivery. Their typical lunch box consists of red rice, pan-fried radish cake and lotus seed bao, some veggies, as well as a soup and dessert. While strictly vegetarian, they do sometimes serve egg – so vegans should double check, but they do try to cater to fully plant-based eaters as much as possible.

Pizzaveg

Pizzaveg is a vegetarian diner offering a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian pizzas. They have some seriously creative pizza creations for the brave to try (strawberry pizza, anyone?) as well as the better known classics like meatless pepperoni. Fast is their style, so expect the typical sides (all veggie-fied), such as seitan-based skewers and “chicken” nuggets. They have recently made the option available to swap out regular cheese for vegan rice-based cheese on all of their pizzas, for most of what’s on the menu is vegan-friendly.

Veggie Mami

Veggie Mami is a private kitchen in Tseun Wan offering vegetarian food made with organic ingredients. The kitchen caters to vegans too – just let them know beforehand, and they are very happy to modify their dishes. One of their favourite dishes to serve is veggie char siu fan, which they make from seitan and tofu.

Ching Chung Koon

Looking for vegan takeaway or a quick meal? Try Ching Chung Koon, known as Green Pine Monastery in English, a Taoist temple that features a small café with Chinese plant-based dishes and take-out options. Try their traditionally “cooling” brothy soups made out of radishes, snow ear fungus and carrots, or more “heaty” dimsum snacks like veggie spring rolls and red bean paste buns. Hidden in Tuen Mun, the garden temple is also a nice place to visit and enjoy the bonsai exhibits and ancient relics on a tranquil afternoon.

Green Common (Tuen Mun & Tseung Kwan O)

Part marketplace store and part deli, Green Common‘s Tuen Mun location provides delicious plant-based meal choices to eat in or to go throughout the day. They have lots of local Cantonese classics on the menu – which have been converted to become vegan-friendly, of course. Some of these include the Hong Kong Style Oat Milk Tea, local favourite cheung fan and beloved cha-chaan-teng afternoon snack french toast. They also serve up dishes featuring trendy plant-based alternatives, such as the Beyond Burger and JUST Scramble!
