Food & Drink: Hong Kong’s Best Vegetarian Indian Restaurants

5 Mins Read

Praised for its curries, aromatic spices, and flavorful food pairings, there is no contest that Indian food is just so good. Oscillating between sweet, spicy and savory, there is a dish for just about any palate. And don’t get us started about Indian desserts, which deserve a whole separate post altogether based on the sheer vastness of different cultures, traditions, and climates! While traditional Indian fare is strictly vegetarian, it definitely is not hard to find a dish that’ll make you forget it’s meatless. For those of you trying to cut back on meat or trying out Green Mondays, take heed! Here are the best vegetarian Indian restaurants in Hong Kong, in no particular order.

Saravana Bhavan

A Green Queen favorite, Saravana Bhavan features some of the most delicious South Indian and Pakistani (with plenty of North Indian options as well) vegan and vegetarian dishes this side of Tsim Sha Tsui. As one of the world’s largest chains of vegetarian restaurants, boasting over 60 outlets globally, they specialize in crispy, golden crepe-like dosas, soft and spongy idlis, and deep-friend lentil doughnut-esque vadas. With a daily changing menu of homemade desserts, be sure to save room for some sweets.

Haveli

A popular Tin Hau hotspot, Haveli serves a variety of classic North and South Indian dishes using only fresh, seasonal ingredients. With a rotating menu every quarter, be on the lookout for their section of Indo Chinese specials like Szechuan noodles and paneer chili made with traditional Chinese sauces. But we gotta tell you – their curry is definitely the spice of life. Be sure to pair it with some garlic naan to  soak up that paneer in a tomato and spice gravy!

Big plus: they also have a Jain menu available on request. Located in the heart of Wan Chai, this spacious layout doesn’t miss a beat with a full bar on deck to cater for corporate and private parties. With a culinary team of Tandoor chefs, curry chefs and renowned South Indian chefs, choices abound on this authentic Indian menu.

Branto Pure Veg Indian Restaurant

With a loyal following, Branto first got their start introducing vegetarian Indian pizza to the people of Surat in the state of Gujarat, India (their moniker is a derivative of Italian). True to life, you’ll still find a variety of veggie pie options like Indian Paneer pizza and Corn Pineapple pizza. But Italian pleasantries aside, Branto serves a variation of Northern and Southern Indian dishes, Gujarati, Punjabi, Jain and some Chinese dishes. Famed for their signature thalis (set meals), pav bhaji, and popular Punjabi dish chole bhatura, this longtime Kowloon haunt always packs a crowd so come early!
