How did yoga enter your life?

I started teaching community yoga about 4 years ago after a brief period of teaching private sessions. Once I started teaching group classes and felt how exhilarating the group energy could be, it was clear to me that there was no turning back, especially in Ashtanga when the whole class breathes as one and moves in a fixed sequence practice. The style itself gives you a strong sense of being a part of a greater community and a living tradition.

Where and what type of yoga do you teach?

I primarily teach Ashtanga Vinyasa, Yin, and handstands. Occasionally I teach vinyasa, but I think I am not as creative as I want to be when it comes to sequencing, so I prefer to stick with Ashtanga’s fixed sequence practice where I get to focus my teaching on alignment, the quality of breath, and mindfulness for the body and the bandhas.

What yoga mat do you use every day?

My favourite mat is the Easy Yoga Breathing Space Pro mat because of its great grip and right level of softness, and it also dries very quickly.

What yoga accessory do you swear by?

I try to attach to any prop or rely on one in order to enjoy a practice, but if I have to pick one, it would be the bolster. I sometimes use it for restorative yoga, which is just as important as dynamic practices.

What is your favorite yogawear brand?

I like Easyoga‘s men’s hot yoga shorts because they fit yoga competition requirements (form fitting and comfortable, unlike the thin and tight compression types). I’ve worn them at every competition I’ve been in and they are like my lucky shorts.

What is your daily mantra?

I guess I have different mantras depending on what challenges the day brings, but every now and then I remember Mahatma Gandhi’s famous phrase “Be the change you want to see in the world” and Thich Nhat Hanh’s “Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet”.

What yoga studio do you enjoy practicing at?

I’ve been a member of Pure Yoga for 10+ years now and I appreciate the quality of their senior teachers (I’ve been taking private sessions with Master Samrat Dasgupta for about 3 years) and their nice studio environments.

Where do you go to eat?

Nood is pretty good and I know Chef Moy really puts his heart and soul into the food and juices he prepares every day. He’s also an Ashtangi and we always chat about food and Ashtanga whenever we run into each other!

What’s your favorite thing about Green Queen?

I love that you guys cover many topics that I regularly want to read online and support independent teachers, brands and businesses in Hong Kong.
