EcoDrive Hong Kong Launches Third “Enough Plastic” Campaign To Tackle Single-Use Plastic Waste

Hong Kong non-profit EcoDrive Hong Kong announces third Enough Plastic campaign to raise awareness about the city’s plastic waste problem.

EcoDrive Hong Kong, a non-profit organization committed to promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, is proud to announce the launch of its third “Enough Plastic” campaign. The campaign is aimed at raising awareness about Hong Kong’s reliance on single-use plastic and its detrimental effects on the environment.

This is the third iteration of the campaign, which was first introduced in 2019, features a new generation of celebrities, including Lin Min-Chen, Anson Bean, Mandy Tam, and Adam Pak, who are lending their popularity and social media influence to educate the public on the plastic waste issue. The campaign’s message is light-hearted and humorous, yet thought-provoking, with an aim to encourage the audience to rethink their plastic use and make better choices.

According to statistics from the Hong Kong government, the city generates around 1.7 million tonnes of waste per year, with more than 300 tonnes of single-use plastic discarded every day. The over-reliance on disposable plastic products is not only polluting the environment but also contributing to global warming.

The “Enough Plastic” campaign seeks to encourage the public to participate by saying no to single-use plastic (SUP) and opting for more sustainable alternatives. F&B and retail businesses have pledged to switch to eco-friendly alternatives during the campaign period, while schools and businesses can organize “NO SUP Day” on May 30th. Furthermore, businesses are encouraged to offer rewards or discounts to customers who bring their reusable bags, bottles, or containers.

Carbon Wallet, a Hong Kong-based green living rewards platform, is another tool EcoDrive is working with. The public can use its digital app to track their plastic waste reduction efforts. Users can earn green rewards, such as free gifts and MTR rides, by scanning their receipts and recording their plastic waste reduction efforts.

In celebration of Earth Day 2023, Carbon Wallet shared it launched a new recycling program in collaboration with six leading beauty brands including Fresh, L’Occitane, The Body Shop, Factiv, EVOLCARE and Melvita and are working with recycling partner V Cycle to encourage consumers to recycle their empty beauty product by providing a network of in-store recycling points at over 60 participation locations.

In addition to all the above, EcoDrive Hong Kong is organizing an art and writing competition on plastic reduction for kindergarten and primary school students. The organization believes that educating the next generation is crucial in addressing the plastic waste issue and creating a cleaner and more sustainable future.

The campaign is supported by sponsor partners Sino Group and Central Development Limited, both of whom say they share the organization’s vision of promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

According to Tansy Tom, co-founder of EcoDrive, “If we can just change one habit, we can make a difference. We hope to empower our younger generation to speak up and make good choices for a cleaner Hong Kong.”

Co-founder Yolanda Choy believes that a cleaner living environment is essential for children’s health and well-being.

Hong Kong’s plastic waste issue is a growing concern, with its landfills rapidly filling up, and its marine environment suffering from pollution. According to industry data, Hong Kong is one of the world’s largest consumers of single-use plastics per capita. Moreover, only around 14% of the city’s plastic waste is recycled, while the rest is either incinerated or ends up in landfills.

The “Enough Plastic” campaign is a significant step towards addressing Hong Kong’s plastic waste issue and creating a more sustainable future. Through education, awareness-raising, and collective action, we can all make a difference and create a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.
