Hong Kong Wetland Park
Located on 61-hectares of land in Yuen Long, the Hong Kong Wetland Park is dedicated to the conservation of Hong Kong’s natural wildlife and plantlife. The park features diverse habitats including freshwater marshes, ponds, mudflats, and mangroves. In addition kids will enjoy the Butterfly Garden and Swamp Adventure indoor playroom. Before you leave don’t forget to check out “Pui Pui” the Salt Water Crocodile! The park can be reached via MTR or bus.
Single-entry tickets are HKD 30 for adults and HKD 15 for children, with children under 3 free. Open 10AM to 5PM Mondays, Wednesdays to Sundays, Public Holidays. Closed Tuesdays.
Tai Tong Organic Ecopark (Lychee Valley)
Tai Tong Lychee Valley offers a range of activities for the entire family. Get your hands a dirty by spending the day picking strawberries or other seasonal produce. Animal lovers can feed the animals at the mini zoo. The more adventurous individuals can ride horses or take advantage of the large rope course. If you are making a day of it you can take advantage of the the large BBQ site or bring a picnic lunch. The park can be reached via MTR and then shuttle bus or bus.
HKD 20 admissions fee. Open daily 9AM to 6PM.
Hong Kong Dolphin Watch
Hong Kong has a great selection of wildlife and one of the most unique species are the wild pink dolphins, also know as the Indo-Pacific Humback Dolphin. Hong Kong Dolphin Watch organizes environmental watch tours for people to see these spectacular creatures off of Lantau Island. While not a registered charity the organization does donate to the WWF. The tour departs from Tung Chung on Lantau and tranfer can be arranged from their TST office.
Trips operate every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) & Sun Garden Cafe
Located on Hong Kong’s highest mountain, Tai Mo Shan, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden is full of trails and views making it great place for a family outing. In addition they have family friendly displays such as an eco-garden, orchid greenhouse and raptor roost. While visiting the farm make sure to be on the lookout for wildlife including wild boars, frogs, birds and butterflies. You can also visit the Sun Garden Cafe for a health-conscious, vegetarian and mostly organic meal.
HKD 20 admission fee, children under 12 are free. Open from 9:30AM to 5:00PM. Check site for 2014 park closures.
Lake Egret Nature Park
Lake Egret Nature Park is located in Tai Po Kau Village and features 23 acres of woodlands and wildlife featuring mangroves, lagoons, and fresh water ponds. The park is also walking distance to the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve if you fancy a longer walk in the woods. After exploring the park visit the Museum of Ethnology to gain a better understanding of ancient civilizations. If you are feeling hungry visit the Little Egret Restaurant or the BBQ Garden. The park can be reached via MTR or bus.
Museum admission is HKD 20 for adults and HKD 15 for children. Open from 10AM to 6PM.
