The sweet-toothed in the UK can now enjoy filled vegan Krispy Kreme doughnuts for the first time. Three varieties launched following the success of the vegan glazed doughnut last year. Krispy Kreme still has not announced plans to launch vegan options in the U.S.
The new vegan filled doughnuts were released on December 31, 2021. Timed to not miss out on a single day of Veganuary, the move marks the second year that Krispy Kreme has participated. Each flavour is certified by The Vegan Society.
Catering for the treat seekers
Simple glazed ring doughnuts saw Krispy Kreme enter the vegan world in January 2021. Vegans in remote locations could take advantage of mail order availability. ““We are excited to extend our range of iconic irresistibly original doughnuts with the launch of our first ever vegan offering, available exclusively in the UK,” Louise Direito, Krispy Kreme UK and Ireland’s head of innovation, revealed in a company statement at the time. “We know January is a time that many are trying out new lifestyles and set ourselves the challenge to create a plant-based doughnut that is equally delicious as the original, with absolutely no compromise.”
Now, they have risen to the challenge of creating filled varieties with zero animal products. Fudge Brownie Bliss, Caramel Choc Delight and Apple Custard Crumble have been released.
“We are really excited to bring this range to customers and spread a little joy in January and are confident it delivers on the irresistible taste we are known and loved for whilst being accessible to a broader network of customers,” Direito said in a recent statement.
Catching up with the competition
Dunkin’ is Krispy Kreme’s biggest competitor. In terms of vegan options, it raced ahead last year with the unveiling of 41 animal-free treats. The launch came after a petition with more than 20,000 signatures was presented to the company by Animal Outlook. The animal-rights group sponsored the petition. Again., the U.S. lost out as the flavours were launched only in Belgium. There have been no Stateside plans announced, to date.
The biggest Veganuary ever?
With Veganuary thoroughly underway, every day brings news of another exciting new food launch. Krispy Kreme is the latest in a long line that already include cheeses, chicken-free nuggets and more.
Burger King was the latest to announce a Vegnuary-related release. It’s new vegan chicken nuggets are available now, served with sweet chili dipping sauce. The recipe has been developed with Dutch brand The Vegetarian Butcher. Existing animal-free options have remained on the menu, bringing the total to three. The Vegan Royale was the first collaboration between The Vegetarian Butcher and Burger King.
Domino’s and Pizza Hut have both expanded their vegan options this month, if only temporarily in the case of Domino’s. Pizza Hut has launched a new Vegan Flamin’ Buffalo, powered by Frank’s spicy sauce. Domino’s chose to make an animal-free pepperoni pie. The pepperoni pieces have been developed by The Vegetarian Butcher, who appears to have been a favourite partner for many big brands this year.
Owned by Unilever, The Vegetarian Butcher has made a recent move into the retail sector in Singapore. It follows a successful launch via foodservice channels.
