Low waste retail pioneer & all around Green Queen Tamsin Thornburrow has just opened Hong Kong’s first bulk, plastic-free and DIY cosmetics and skincare shop in Sai Ying Pun. Beauty junkies now have their very own eco mecca to linger at complete with everything from the most complete line of plastic-free makeup to biodegradable glitter to a wide range of eco femme products.
The selection is extensive: Live Zero Bulk Beauty stocks everything you need to create your own cosmetics like body balms or facial scrubs including bulk essential oils (organic from Australia), butters & oils (shea, argan oil, rosehip), powders (arrowroot, bicarbonate of soda), natural hydrosols (for making face toners), waxes (beeswax, soy wax) and hard-to-find ingredients like silica gel, silicone candle soap moulds and candelilla wax (vegans can now make their own food wraps.
On the plastic-free brand side, they are supporting local highlights like ZeroYet100, einnoc, Coconut Matter and Bathe to Basics as well as cult fave imports like Habitat 10 toxin-free nail polish, Elate Cosmetics makeup, Ethique shampoo & body bars, Bioglitter and Avasol reef-safe sunscreen.
The store also features plastic-free living essentials (Stasher, bamboo toothbrushes, KooShoo hair ties) and Soapnut Republic’s bulk laundry and household refillables including a new detergent powder.
Another big highlight: the full shelf of sustainable women’s hygiene products: every menstrual cup in town (because our parts are not one size fits all!) from Ruby to Femme Cycle, Lunette to Super Jennie and Lily, plus Modibodi leak-proof period underwear in a (glass) jar and Indian social enterprises’s Eco Femme reusable sanitary pads.
The new digs may seem familiar to steadfast Live Zero fans: it’s the location of the original Live Zero shop, which in early January moved two doors down the street to occupy a larger space with a wider selection focused on groceries and food (they now stock things like plastic-free fresh bread by Mayse Artisan Bakery, Happy Cow Dairy Free ice cream in glass jars, frozen berries).
It’s another win for Thornburrow, who has a preternatural talent for curating the best local and international selection of zero-waste and packaging-free-where-possible products. She knows her clientele well and the store is sure to become another must-visit destination for the city’s environmentally conscious beauty mavens. So grab your glass jars (or find the right on in-store- they have a wide offering of metal bottles, glass cosmetics jars and vials) and get on down there!
