These 10 Plant-Based Food Tech Startups Are Looking To Disrupt The Global Food System

Berlin-based ProVeg Incubator supports plant-based and cultured food tech startups all over the world to help them raise funding and develop products that will help solve the challenges of our broken food system. This year marks the accelerator’s fourth cohort, and their mission is to empower some of the world’s leading 2.0 startups that are working to solve some of the most pressing issues, from vegan dairy substitutes to cruelty-free lab grown protein and nutrient-dense plant-based meats. Below, we showcase the 10 new startups admitted into ProVeg’s 2020 batch including an exciting new plant-based team from India.  

1. Mister Veg

Founding date: 2018

Founders: Rupinder Singh & Simarjeet Singh 

Headquarters: Faridabad, India

Mission: Mister Veg was founded to create cruelty-free and nutritious plant-based meat and seafood alternatives to the Indian market, with a focus on shelf stability and affordability. Their main products include vegan seafood and meat, as well as a line of plant-based ready-to-eat meals that contain no preservatives but can be kept at room temperature for an extended period of time. 

2. Hooked 

Founding date: 2019

Founders: Emil Wasteson & Tom Johansson

Headquarters: Stockholm, Sweden

Mission: Hooked produces plant-based seafood products rich in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. Their first products were shredded vegan tuna and salmon, and are looking to develop more nutritious, healthy plant-based seafood alternatives that are slated to launch in late 2020. 

3. Meet Jack 

Founding date: 

Founders: Marjolein Pleune & Kaline Van Halder

Headquarters: Haarlem, the Netherlands

Mission: Meet Jack is an alternative meat startup working on turning jackfruit into a range of vegan whole food meat products, from Dutch meatballs and croquettes to burgers. By using the naturally texturous young jackfruit, Meet Jack’s products undergo minimal processing. The startup is currently selling their products via partnerships with restaurants and caterers. 

4. Heuros

Founding date: 2018

Founders: Nick Beaumont

Headquarters: Brisbane, Australia

Mission: Heuros is a cell-based startup that has developed a growth medium that is free from any animal ingredients or genetic modifications or engineering, which has yet to become common in many cultured meat companies. Its technology can be applied to grow various cultured meat and poultry muscle cells for cultivated products, and the company plans to supply its proprietary medium to cultured meat producers as well as develop its own line of in-house products. 

5. The Live Green Co.

Founding date: 2018

Founders: Priyanka Srinivas & Sasikanth Chemalamudi 

Headquarters: Santiago, Chile

Mission: The Live Green Co. has developed a line of sustainable and healthy plant-based products superfood ingredients such as mung beans, moringa and tulsi. Its products undergo minimal processing due to their biotechnology and machine learning smart tech and are gluten-free, soya-free and are packaged using zero plastic.

6. Remilk

Founding date: 2019

Founders: Aviv Wolff & Ori Cohavi

Headquarters: Tel Aviv, Israel

Mission: Remilk uses precision fermentation technology to recreate dairy proteins without cows, which can then be used to develop a range of dairy products, from a milk alternative that mimics the nutritional profile and taste of real cow’s milk to cheeses, yogurts and dairy dips. 

7. Zveetz

Founding date: 2018

Founders: Christian Krause & Vishal Kawatra

Headquarters: Berlin, Germany

Mission: Zveetz is a smart food company that develops sugar-free plant-based desserts, and was created from the founders’ personal journey into health and fitness due to a long family history of sugar overconsumption. Their initial line of products will be a range of vegan mousse desserts, created using natural ingredients such as coconut, vanilla, peanuts, cold brew and sweetened with stevia. 

8. Wholyfood

Founding date: 2020

Founders: Anthony Masseli, Adrien Masseli, Julien Amsellem & Camile Tomat

Headquarters: Paris, France

Mission: Wholyfood is a startup offering its own range of plant-based bowls, dips and sauces such as vegan mayonnaise, sour cream, pesto and tzatziki dip for food service providers. The company is a spin-off of the Paris-based vegan street food restaurant Wholywood. 

9. Devon Garden

Founding date: 2018

Founders: Cesar Torres

Headquarters: Exeter, United Kingdom

Mission: Devon Garden is developing ethical and sustainable plant-based dairy products using their proprietary protein extraction technology. Its main product is a plant-based pea milk derived from yellow split peas, which contains more protein and fibre and significantly less sugar. 

10. I Love You Veggie Much

Founding date: 2019

Founders: Susanne Komorek & Darja Pilz

Headquarters: Berlin, Germany

Mission: I Love You Veggie Much is a plant-based producer of vegan and organic baby foods, which are optimised to meet the nutritional needs of infants and toddlers. The startup’s main product will be a cereal-based vegan organic breakfast meal for babies from 6 to 24 months old.
