This week the company launched new online edit NET SUSTAIN, which aims to make considerate sustainable fashion accessible. From ethically sourced materials, to local craftsmanship and waste reduction, the collection edit caters to mindful customers who care about the planet.
NET SUSTAIN will showcase carefully curated retail items and content demonstrating qualities of environmental responsibility and welfare-awareness. In this new edit, every single product is vetted to meet key criteria and attributes of human, animal and environmental responsibility and meet the highest welfare standards in the fashion and beauty industry. “Our aim is to give a voice to the brands that are truly making positive changes by providing them with a platform to highlight their best practice,” the company’s Global Buying Director Elizabeth von der Goltz, said in a statement.
NET-A-PORTER’s foray into conscious fashion embraces the rising trend of consumer responsibility. In this new era of sustainability, global consumers are taking on personal accountability for the ecological cost and social consequences of their lifestyle and consumption patterns. According to a 2017 Nielson report, shoppers in Asia in particular exhibited more attentiveness than those from North America and Europe when it came to expectations of corporate environmental responsibility.
Over half of the items featured in NET SUSTAIN’s line-up of brands must be manufactured in their own community to ensure that companies have invested in the local economy. In addition to being locally made, products must also meet the industry’s highest Fairtrade certifications. Even the materials used in each item are scrutinised for their impact on the environment, people and animals. “Our sustainable edit provides our customers with the knowledge they need, understanding that they can trust that these brands have been carefully reviewed and meet our criteria for inclusion.” continued von der Goltz.
Beyond ethical welfare practices, labels appearing on NET SUSTAIN are also guaranteed for sustainability. Products are designed with a circular economy principle in mind, and meet green standards in its manufacturing process. Therefore, customers can expect that the collection will display goods made from upcycled and recycled fabrics and presented in minimalistic eco-friendly packaging.

One of the highlighted brands is renowned sustainability pioneer Stella McCartney, whose products are fur and leather free, and comprised of regenerated fibres.
