Despite the fact that we still have a 4-person dine-in rule (thanks, Covid-19!), Hong Kong’s plant-based food scene is not going anywhere. There are so many new vegan bites and eateries to try out across the city this month, and as always, we’re more than happy to dish out the latest happenings in town to y’all. Here’s what’s new in plant-based dining this September.

Hong Kong’s first 100% plant-based pâtisserie Bien Caramélisé opens doors

Say hello to Bien Caramélisé, Hong Kong’s first-ever 100% plant-based French pâtisserie. Now, herbivore pastry lovers can get their butter-free and egg-free taste of traditional French-style pastries, from mille-feuilles and éclairs to choux and tartes au citron that are made entirely from only plants. We sat down with Chef Jessica Chow recently, where she dished out the culinary secrets and diverse ingredients behind her gorgeous plant-based creations.

Mother Pearl launches to offer plant-based healthy bubble teas

Located in the heart of bustling Central district, Hong Kong’s first completely dairy-free bubble tea shop has opened. Called Mother Pearl, almost every ingredient used by Mother Pearl is made in-house from scratch – perhaps the only boba tea house in the city to do so! Drinks here aren’t just totally Insta-worthy, but are also healthier for you too, containing only low-glycemic sweeteners such as coconut sugar, lakanto monkfruit sugar, and blackstrap molasses, and blended with house-made vegan “mylks” such as oat, hemp and almond. OmniPork Luncheon is now available for retail

Say what? Yes, after launching to huge fanfare earlier this year in May, Green Monday’s newest plant-based product – the world’s first vegan version of “Spam” – is now available for retail so you can cook up delicious and carcinogenic-free luncheon meat dishes at home! It will be sold for HK$48 across all Green Common stores and e-shop, HKTV Mall, and selected Marketplace by Jasons locations with more supermarkets including ParknShop, City’Super and Dah Chong Hong to stock soon. Read more about this seriously delicious new addition to plant-based frozen food section here.

Phuture Foods’ plant-based pork now available at Vegelink

Earlier this year, we reported that Malaysian food tech Phuture Foods has rolled out its vegan-friendly pork mince across several food outlets in Singapore – and all of us were wondering when they would expand to Hong Kong and the wait is finally over. Phuture Foods’ plant-based pork analogue, a mix of non-GMO soy, pea, rice and chickpea protein, is now being sold at Vegelink, available in stores and on its online website for HK$98 per 1-kilogram package.

TREEHOUSE is serving vegan pizzas at BaseHall

TREEHOUSE, the beloved plant-based healthy fast casual restaurant , is now serving up sourdough pizzas with housemade vegan cheese at its BaseHall branch in Central’s Jardine House. You can choose multiple pizzas here, from roasted veggies to olive and rocket, all topped with their fresh whole plant-based ingredients, house special sauces and blends of (homemade) vegan cheese. Kennedy Town welcomes veggie eatery Sofia

Sofia Vegetarian Restaurant is the newest plant-based diner to land in Kennedy Town, now becoming an exciting food scene for us herbivores. While the restaurant is vegetarian, over half of its menu is vegan-friendly so you’ll be able to enjoy a wide array of international dishes from Thai-style risotto to Beyond Burgers, veggie “fish” curry, lasagna and more.

Bali Tyche now open on Lamma Island

Suffering from a bit of cabin fever? Head over to Lamma Island this weekend! Enjoy a bit of nature and grab a bite at this adorable café that just opened up. Called Bali Tyche, the restaurant will be serving vegan and vegetarian dishes, such as this banh mi (pictured) with marinated tofu, pickles, green chilli and a housemade vegan pâté. What more to ask for?

Moono serving Hong Kong with vegan Japanese-style pastries

Yes, we know Moono has been around for a while, but it’s just landed on our radar and we had to include it in our roundup. This vegan pastry brand will now fulfill all your Japanese-style dessert dreams, offering completely egg-free and dairy-free mooncakes, macarons, petit sweets and more. Besides being totally Insta-worthy, Moono’s desserts come in amazing flavours inspired by Asian cuisine, from black sesame to matcha.

Impossible Foods launches plant-based sausage across town & debuts brunch deal

New vegan meal delivery service Mindful Meals launches

New vegan restaurant coming soon, you heard it here first: Acclaimed raw vegan chef Tina Barrat (of Maya Café fame) is opening a restaurant in Central next month, stay tuned for more details and get excited for her incredible vegan cheese offerings.  

Plastic-free OmniPork dumplings now at Live Zero: Rejoice! You can now get packaging-free frozen vegan dumplings filled with plant-based pork mince OmniPork and crunchy veggies at packaging-free grocery Live Zero, so now you can have your low-carbon and low-waste “cake” and eat it too. 

Dr. Fern’s plant-based lunch boxes: Hong Kong’s gin parlour Dr. Fern’s is now offering vegan and vegetarian-friendly lunch boxes (HK$60) like Gardein Chicken & Pumpkin, Shiitake Mushrooms & Braised Tofu and Eggplant Omnipork, all of which come with rice and we hear they are delicious.
