Scaling Up and Strengthening Global Position

Following its Series A round four years ago, The Protein Brewery has laid the groundwork to commercialize Fermotein at scale. This new funding will be used to:

  • Strengthening sales and application expertise, ensuring Fermotein meets the needs of food manufacturers worldwide.
  • Commercialize Fermotein in the United States and Europe, accelerating business growth in key market segments.
  • Expand production at the Mijkenbroek facility, solidifying our readiness for large-scale commercialization.
  • Develop the Fermotein innovation platform, unlocking new possibilities in nutrition and product applications.

“This funding is a springboard for global expansion. With Fermotein, we are not just offering another protein – we are redefining how food is made: nutritious, sustainable, and scalable at a lower cost. The Protein Brewery is ready to lead the protein and fiber transition,” said Thijs Bosch, CEO of The Protein Brewery. “We are now entering a defining moment: all building blocks of operation are in place, and we are ready to accelerate.”

Investors Back the Future of Food

As part of this round, Thomas Grotkjær, Partner at Novo Holdings, highlighted The Protein Brewery’s readiness to scale: “The Protein Brewery has built the infrastructure, laid the groundwork, and is now positioned to bring biotech-driven food innovation to the global stage. This funding fuels its ability to drive real impact in the food industry.”

Daan Meijer, Investment Manager at Invest-NL emphasized The Protein Brewery’s role in shaping the future of sustainable protein: “With its unique fermentation-based solution, The Protein Brewery stands out in the alternative protein space and strengthens the Netherlands’ leadership in food innovation. As a Dutch company driving the protein transition, The Protein Brewery is setting a new standard in sustainability, a vision we are proud to support.”

Daan van Lange, Senior Investment Manager & Team lead Climate Tech of the BOM: “We’ve supported The Protein Brewery since its inception, and seeing it scale from an idea into a full-fledged operation is remarkable. The Protein Brewery is a prime example of how local innovation can have global impact. And it’s happening in Brabant. The Scale-Up Plant of Europe: a leading powerhouse for foodtech scale ups and innovation.”

Fermotein: A New Frontier in Food Innovation

Fermotein is a high-protein, high-fiber ingredient that integrates seamlessly into baked goods & snacks, dairy alternatives like yogurts and nutritional products like protein shakes, functional bars and meal replacement drinks due to its tasteless and odourless nature. Unlike many alternative proteins that require high capital investment, Fermotein’s production process is significantly less capital-intensive, allowing for more cost-efficient scaling.

Central to this scalability is The Protein Brewery’s proprietary fungal strain exclusively leveraged for mycoprotein. Its patented process enables low capital investment and cost-effective production, overcoming key industry hurdles that have long limited the affordability and scalability of alternative proteins.

Beyond versatility and scalability, Fermotein delivers a unique blend of high-quality protein and essential fibers. The Protein Brewery is exploring its role in satiety and metabolic health, particularly GLP-1 pathways.

The Protein Brewery is launching Fermotein with several customers in the USA in the coming months and is also expanding its business in Singapore. The commercial team is also preparing for market launch in the EU and UK, which will follow once the regulatory approval is in place.

“We see this as a defining moment—not just for The Protein Brewery, but for the next generation of the food ecosystem. The future of protein is about quality, nutrition, and sustainability, and this funding ensures we will play a key role in that future,” said Thijs Bosch.
