This Vegan Chickpea Nutella Has 81% More Protein Than The Bestselling Brand

Food company Fabalous unveiled its award-winning Organic Hazelnut and Cocoa Spread. For the first time, a vegan ‘nutella’ spread alternative has been created using chickpeas.

Fabalous is a part of the Italy-based Coppola Foods family committed to making healthy and more sustainable food products. The fourth-generation family business has been producing and marketing food since 1903.

Just 8 ingredients

The Fabalous Organic Hazelnut & Cocoa Spread contains all organic, plant-based, and natural ingredients. The brand favors chickpeas for their versatility and nutrition profile. More than 30 percent of the brand’s offerings contain chickpeas. For the vegan Nutella, the chickpeas provide 81% more protein, 43% less saturated fat, and 57% less sugar than its rivals.

Instead of palm oil, the company uses sunflower oil and cocoa butter. In addition, the spreads contain ethically sourced cocoa, hazelnut paste, sunflower lecithin, salt and is sweetened with cane sugar. Each jar has an average of 128 dried chickpeas and 8 shelled hazelnuts. The spreads come in two flavors – Orange Hazelnut & Cocoa and Crunchy Hazelnut & Cocoa. Fabalous has also ditched plastic packaging for its new spreads, using glass instead.

The spreads can be used in a variety of dishes, from toast to waffles to porridge and pancakes.

Why chickpeas?

Chickpeas are high in protein, and good sources of vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Growing this crop helps the soil and air as they naturally emit nitrogen into the earth.

Just like Nutella, but better

In 2020, the spreads won the Great Taste Awards with a 2-star rating. Commenting on the spreads, the judges said: “This glossy, highly aromatic spread is a dead ringer for Nutella but much, much better. The decadent flavor and texture remain but this spread is joyfully free of all the excess sugar that blocks the full hazelnut and cocoa flavors from really working their natural magic.”

The product has also won the Better-for-You Innovative Product of the Year by the Food Matters Live Awards and Best Organic Product by Nourish Awards.

Coppola Foods also offers tomato-based products, sauces, and soups, beans and legume-based products, as well as preserved vegetables and olives, oils, vinegar, and grain-based products.
