BSF Enterprise Rebrands Cultivated Meat Technologies As Commercial Arm Milieu.bio

UK biotech firm BSF Enterprise has reorganised its corporate structure, making 3D Bio-Tissues its core IP and manufacturing engine and rebranding Cultivated Meat Technologies into a dedicated commercial arm called Milieu.bio.

British tissue engineering company BSF Enterprise has announced a corporate restructuring to streamline its cultivated meat operations and clarify communication channels.

The firm has established 3D Bio-Tissues, its cell-culture media and scaffold-free structured tissue production business, as its core IP and manufacturing engine, concentrating on core platform research, tissue engineering scaffolding, and primary contract manufacturing.

Meanwhile, it has rebranded Cultivated Meat Technologies as Milieu.bio, which will serve as a dedicated commercial vehicle for the company’s culture media supplements. Under the new structure, 3D Bio-Tissues will manufacture finished media for Milieu.bio under a cost-plus supply agreement.

The move is designed to support shareholder value through a disciplined hub-and-spoke operational model, alongside sister brands Lab-Grown Leather and Kerato. It comes nearly a year after BSF Enterprise secured £15M ($20M) to speed up the commercialisation of its cellular agriculture products.

Founded in 2018 by Geoff Baker, BSF Enterprise develops tissue engineering solutions for multiple sectors, including food, materials, and medtech. Its core tech platform enables the manufacturing of cell-cultured alternatives to animal and human tissues at scale.

The restructured framework will see 3D Bio-Tissues operate as the firm’s core research engine, patent holder, and manufacturing facility. It will formulate, package and release inventory from its labs in Newcastle upon Tyne, and retain full legal ownership of foundational patents, trademarks, and proprietary formulation know-how.

It will also receive an ongoing top-line IP licence royalty based on gross external turnover generated by Milieu.bio, establishing a clean commercial framework between the two entities.

Until now, direct sales of media consumables were handled by 3D Bio-Tissues, alongside its advanced tissue engineering and corneal therapeutic developments. But the newly branded Milieu.bio is taking over as an independent, dedicated commercial supplier focused on servicing external life science and cultivated meat developers.

The move will end direct commercial media sales from 3D Bio-Tissues, removing commercial ambiguity for clients and providing a clear identity for BSF Enterprise’s consumables business.

Milieu.bio will operate as a storefront for the company’s proprietary cell-culture media additives, namely CityMix and CityBoost, targeting the external biopharma, cell therapy, and cellular agriculture markets.

The new subsidiary will run on an asset-light model free from the burdens of capital expenditure, facility leases, or heavy equipment depreciation, providing the flexibility to explore dedicated third-party investment or strategic partnerships.

Milieu.bio to deliver ‘practical, high-value consumables’ for cultivated meat scale-up

BSF Enterprise’s restructuring is underpinned by several enduring challenges in the cellular agriculture and bioprocessing industries. As these technologies move towards commercial scale, companies are still grappling with high media costs driven by expensive growth factors and animal components like fetal bovine serum.

Instead of deploying large amounts of money into capital-intensive downstream food production to make finished cultivated meat products, the company’s realigned strategy is focused on supplying high-value consumable media additives to the wider industry.

Its media supplements, formulated with proprietary macromolecular crowding technology, bio-mimic native cellular micro-environments, helping boost cell growth kinetics and extracellular matrix deposition while reducing the need for expensive growth media.

BSF Enterprise’s commercial activities are being supported by a £300,000 ($400,000) multi-year supply contract with South Korean cultivated meat startup SeaWith, which will use the former’s City-Mix supplement to scale up its Welldone cultivated beef product and bring costs down by 30%.

BSF Enterprise CEO Che Connon called the reorganisation “an important step” for the company’s hub-and-spoke strategy. “By consolidating our core intellectual property, scientific platforms, and manufacturing inside 3D Bio-Tissues, we are building a focused technological engine that supports our broader subsidiary portfolio,” he said.

“Renaming and refocusing Cultivated Meat Technologies into Milieu.bio establishes a dedicated commercial partner for cell-culture media supplements, providing clear market positioning: BSF is delivering the practical, high-value consumables that enable biomanufacturing sectors to scale efficiently.

“Establishing Milieu.bio as a standalone operating company gives us a dedicated vehicle to grow commercial sales of these products.”
