Domino’s Indonesia Just Dropped 2 New Asian-Inspired ‘Beefless’ Pizzas

Domino’s Indonesia has just added two new meatless items to its menu, developed in partnership with homegrown startup Green Rebel Foods. The two new Asian-inspired pies will be topped with Green Rebel’s vegan-friendly beefless shreds, and are now available across all Domino’s 162 outlets in the country. 

World-famous pizza chain Domino’s has expanded its plant-based offerings in Indonesia, launching two new meat-free pizzas topped with plant-based beef supplied by Green Rebel. The new “Plantt Pro” pies include the Jerky Black Pepper and the Beef Rendang Special, both inspired by local Indonesian flavours.

While both pizzas feature Green Rebel’s vegan-friendly beefless shreds, the Jerky Black Pepper is topped with red bell peppers, barbecue sauce and black pepper sauce, while the Beef Rendang Special contains green bell pepper and an authentic rendang sauce. Both are layered with conventional dairy-based mozzarella cheese, making the pizzas suitable for vegetarians, but not vegans. It is not suitable for vegans as the dough contains 0.02% milk.

Green Rebel, which rebranded from Green Butcher earlier this year and is an offshoot of Burgreens, Indonesia’s largest vegan restaurant chain, makes its range of plant-based beef, chicken and sausage alternatives using non-GMO soy protein, seitan, shiitake mushrooms and chickpeas. 

Both new pizzas are now available across all 162 Domino’s outlets in the country for both takeaway and online delivery. Domino’s Indonesia is operated by F&B Asia Ventures, the QSR arm of Everstone Capital, which also operates the Burger King franchise in Indonesia and India.

Plant-based fast food trend

Domino’s Indonesia’s decision to add new veggie-friendly items to its menu is part of a growing global plant-based trend taking over fast food chains. With as many as 42% of global consumers now identifying as “flexitarians” or part-time vegans, driven by health, environmental and ethical concerns, QSR giants have come under greater pressure to offer more vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Commenting on the partnership with Domino’s Indonesia, Green Rebel co-founder and chief innovation officer Max Mandias said: “Diet change is essential. People will make the shift as long as there is a flavorful, convenient, and wide range of options. Partnering up with QSRs with a huge reach like Domino’s brings us one step closer to our mission to democratize plant-based food in
Asia.”

Mandias added that with consumer demand, the startup is now gearing up to expand distribution in retail channels too, with more than 100 outlets to begin stocking its plant-based range in October.

Aside from Domino’s, other fast food giants like Burger King Indonesia have recently added a Plant-Based Whopper to its menu, partnering with Unilever-subsidiary The Vegetarian Butcher to supply the vegan patties. 

Starbucks Indonesia has taken the plant-based turn as well, tapping Green Rebel to launch a menu featuring a sloppy joe sandwich, wellington pocket and focaccia bread made with the startup’s range of vegan beef.
