Rebellyous Foods Expands Product Range With Plant-Based Nuggets, Patties & Tenders

Plant-based meat maker Rebellyous Foods has expanded its portfolio with three new products, adding frozen vegan patties and tenders to its line-up, as well as a brand new formulation of its nuggets. These products have landed on the market at select grocery stores across Seattle, Portland and Northern California before rolling out at more retail and foodservice channels in the coming weeks. 

Rebellyous Foods, originally founded as Seattle Food Tech in 2017, has just launched several new products, including plant-based chicken patties, tenders and a reformulated version of its vegan nuggets. All three products are made from 100% plant-based ingredients such as soy protein, wheat protein, canola and sunflower oil, as well as natural spices and flavourings, and contain no cholesterol, antibiotics, or hormones.

They are now available for US$5.99 per package at select grocery stores in Seattle, Portland, and Northern California, ahead of a wider retail roll-out at more than 20 shops in the Pacific Northwest. In the coming weeks, the company will also launch its new products at foodservice channels, including on the menus of Seattle-based chicken restaurant chains Ma’ono and Galaxy Rune.

Commenting on the launch, the startup’s founder and CEO Christie Lagally said: “Our fans — from chefs to individual consumers — love our nuggets and have long been asking for patties and tenders. We’ve been hard at work creating the next generation of products that taste exactly like one expects when they bite into a chicken sandwich, nugget, or tender: crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.”

Rebellyous Foods’ product expansion comes amid surging sales in the plant-based food industry, boosted by the coronavirus-driven demand for safer, healthier and sustainable proteins. In the U.S., sales of plant-based meat has surged triple-digits since the pandemic first hit.

Many plant-based brands in the country have reported record sales over 2020, including food tech giant Impossible Foods, who has grown its retail footprint by 100-fold thanks to skyrocketing demand.

Amid the strong sales performance for the plant-based industry despite the economic downturn, investors have been pouring capital into vegan businesses, with Rebellyous Foods having bagged US$6 million in a Series A round last year, which saw participation of major players like Clear Current Capital and Agronomics. Rebellyous received investment from KBW Ventures, the venture capital firm founded by Saudi Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, during its Seed round. 

Among some of the other alternative protein ventures that KBW Ventures has backed in recent months include a number of cell-based startups, such as cultivated seafood maker BlueNalu in a record-breaking round last month, Singapore-based lab-grown milk maker TurtleTree Labs and animal-free pet food startup Bond Pet Foods
