As business begins to return to normal in Hong Kong, we’ve got exciting news coming up in the city’s thriving plant-based food scene. Plenty of new plant-based bites and eateries to try out across the city this month, and we’re here to help you out with the best in new menus, openings and more food news in our column. Here’s what’s new in plant-based dining this June. 

Japanese-inspired cafe NIZEN opens in Kowloon City

The newest plant-based eatery in town is NIZEN. Recently opening its doors in Kowloon City, the quaint Japanese-inspired café is scoring big points amongst Hong Kong’s veggie and omni foodies alike with its impressive menu. Some of the must-try items include its vegetable curry with cauliflower rice, homemade kidney bean burger patty with portobello “bun” and its delicious selection of 100% vegan desserts from cinnamon rolls to earl grey cake.

YEARS launches second 100% vegan branch in Sham Shui Po

There is no doubt that local plant-based café YEARS’ growing fan base will be excited to hear this – the beloved restaurant has just opened its second branch called The Park by Years and this time it’s 100% vegan. Located in Sham Shui Po like their first spot, The Park by Years will serve up many of its original joint’s favourites such as vegan burgers, curries, pastas and salads alongside its acclaimed desserts. Vegan raw lemon cheesecake, anyone?

New plant-based dim sum in town: Deluxe Veggie

Dim sum lovers, rejoice! Deluxe Veggie recently opened up in Mid-Levels’ Coda Plaza, and here you’ll be able to enjoy vegetarian and vegan versions of nearly all of your favourite traditional Cantonese dishes. From veggie stir fries with classic ingredients such as water chestnuts, black fungus, Chinese celery, cashews and tofu to steamed dumplings, crispy turnip cake and rice noodle rolls, Deluxe Veggie will satisfy any herbivore’s dim sum cravings.

Note: while the majority of the dishes are vegan-friendly, double check for some items that may contain egg or honey.

MANA! officially opens in Soho

Hong Kong’s well-known fast casual plant-based café chain MANA! has officially opened the doors of its newest location in Soho’s Staunton Street. The 2,500 square foot restaurant is double the size of its previous Central and Poho locations and will additionally feature the first 100% vegan cheese deli in Hong Kong, serving up artisanal small-batch brie, bleu and chèvre. Alongside its existing menu favourites, MANA! Soho will also offer a new “flatzza”, a half-pizza-half-flat creation.

Sai Ying Pun welcomes vegan comfort food eatery Big Dill

“Vegan just went mainstream” is the slogan for this new 100% plant-based bar and eatery in Sai Ying Pun. Brought by the creators of Hong Kong’s first vegan block party, Big Dill will serve up veganised comfort foods – juicy burgers and fries, “bacon” strip hot dogs, creamy mac n’ cheese and no-lamb gyros (personal recco: go for it!) – and we love that everything is made in-house from scratch using real ingredients!

Live Zero now stocks packaging-free bulk vegan burgers & plant-based cheese

Live Zero, Hong Kong’s original zero-waste food store founded by Tamsin Thornburrow, has just launched several new 100% plant-based meat and cheese alternatives, all available for purchase in bulk without packaging! On offer are Alpha Foods’ vegan chicken nuggets, the famous Beyond Burger patties and sausages, Gardein’s meatless meatballs, beefless strips, chick’n strips and crispy chick’n pieces and Daiya shredded cheeses. Both Live Zero locations in Sai Kung and Sai Ying Pun are now stocked with these options, except Gardein’s beefless strips and chick’n pieces, which will be introduced in the Sai Ying Pun shop next week. Not only will you be saving on packaging waste, Thornburrow told us the bulk prices are roughly 5% off what you would pay elsewhere packaged, so it pays to be low waste.

Treehouse launches at BaseHall

Treehouse, the vegan and vegetarian whole food restaurant that took Soho by storm last year, has just launched at Jardine House’s new food hall BaseHall as a restaurant partner. The plant-based vendor will offer its signature sourdough wraps, homemade patty burgers, platters, sides and more for lunch and dinner daily, all made from scratch using fresh and healthy ingredients.

Wanchai Ferry rolls out Omnipork dumplings

Hong Kong’s most iconic frozen dumpling brand Wanchai Ferry has partnered up with Green Monday to create two new 100% vegan dumplings using the plant-based pork mince Omnipork.  The Black Pepper & Mushroom Omnipork Dumpling and the Purple Cabbage & Corn Omnipork Dumpling are now available for HK$24.90 at over 600 supermarkets across the city, including ParknShop, Wellcome, Aeon and YATA. It will also be served in Green Common eateries and Green Monday’s vegan dine-in concept Kind Kitchen.

Genie Juicery closes ifc mall location: Genie Juicery, one of Hong Kong’s favourite healthy juice bars, recently announced that its 6 years in Central’s ifc mall is coming to an end on June 19, marking the closure of its last brick-and-mortar. Genie will continue its operations online.

Greenwoods TST closes café operations: Greenwoods Raw Café has ceased its foodservice operations at the end of May. It will now operate as a retail shop with raw vegan food workshops still running, whilst maintaining food delivery services via its “Raw@Home” online café. 

Homegrown Foods serving plant-based dishes on Deliveroo: Homegrown Foods, the operator of restaurant group Red Sauce Hospitality and premium produce supplier, is now on Deliveroo, offering farm-to-form vegan and vegetarian dishes from portobello steak to pizza and salads. 

Bergamot Veggie opens in Prince Edward: New Chinese vegetarian restaurant Bergamot Veggie has opened in Prince Edward, serving classic Buddhist-friendly meat-free dishes with a rotating lunchtime set menu. 

404Plant taking orders for vegan desserts: 404Plant is a new 100% vegan bakery, offering freshly made small-batch bagels, plant-based cream cheese, artisan nut-based cheeses, spreads and cakes – all available to order via direct message

YuFu Abundance serving herbivores in Tsuen Wan: Technically not a new veggie eatery, but YuFu Abundance recently landed on our radar. Part grocery store, part café, visitors can expect organic produce and a number of rotating Cantonese veggie and vegan dishes such as stir-fries and “cha siu” rice. 

Sham Shui Po welcomes Veggie Hut: Veggie Hut is the latest vegetarian Chinese casual restaurant to land in Kowloon’s Sham Shui Po district. It serves lunch and dinner, offering a choice of 3 side dishes with rice, soup or a drink at affordable prices. 

BaseHall opens in Jardine House: BaseHall, a new food hall, has just launched in Central’s Jardine House building. Diners can choose from 10 vendors, most of them offering some some vegan and vegetarian options, and BaseHall itself has sustainable features such as compostable tableware and upcycled decor.

Amber revamps menu with extensive plant-based options: Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s two Michelin-starred restaurant Amber has just relaunched its Summer 2020 menu, offering an entirely vegetarian option that is gluten-free and dairy-free, but can be customised to cater to vegans upon request.
