The Week In Food Tech: Indian PB Meat Scene Heats Up, New Meatless Chicken & The World’s Greenest Football Club

Just a few short years ago, it was unusual to get more than a handful of stories each week about meat analogues, dairy alternatives, and other alt and/or vegan foods. Nowadays, the opposite is true. In fact, there are so many developments in the alt-protein and food tech space we decided to create a weekly column that gathers all the various bits of news out there into one single place for easy reading.

This past week, one of India’s leading plant-based meat companies announced a major expansion along with some new QSR menu items. Elsewhere in the world, Planterra Foods’ Ozo brand unveiled new takes on plant-based chicken and “the world’s greenest football club” struck an unlikely partnership.

India: QSR Haldiram’s launches BVeg Foods menu products

The popular restaurant chain will launch the all-new plant based Keema Pao and Keema Samosa in collaboration BVeg Foods, a plant-based meat company with ambitions to help scale up the plant-based food movement in India. Items will be on Haldiram’s winter 2021 menu across all 80 locations in Northern India.

US: Planterra Foods’ Ozo brand launches new plant-based chicken products

JBS US-owned Planterra Foods has released two new items under its Ozo brand. Ozo’s new products include its True Bite plant-based chicken cutlets and chicken shreds. Cutlets will come in garlic & herb and sea salt & pepper flavors, while shreds will be BBQ and rotiserrie style.

UK: Hownd teams up with “the world’s greenest football club”

The plant-based pet food company has struck a three-year partnership with eco-friendly football club the Forest Green Rovers. The deal will include LED advertising on match days and brand partnerships throughout the season for Hownd.

UK: Jack & Bry launches in Ocado

Online grocery retailer Ocado now stocks Jack & Bry’s range of plant-based meat alternatives made with jackfruit. The news comes on the heels of Jack & Bry’s $1.73 million seed round of funding.

US: Eclipse to sell plant-based ice cream at Whole Foods

Eclipse will launch its ice cream, made with functional plant proteins, at Whole Foods stores beginning in Northern California. The release is part of Eclipse’s wider plan to expand across the US. The company just raised a $12 million Series A round which will help fuel expansion.
