Green Queen Media Debuts World’s First Zero Waste Vegan Meal Plan & Digital Recipe Book

Green Queen Media has published the world’s first waste-free plant-based meal plan titled The Green Queen Zero Waste Vegan Meal Plan eBook, authored by Green Queen founder and editor-in-chief Sonalie Figuerias and wellness consultant and plant-based nutrition coach Mariana de Oliveira Dias. The eBook contains 63 whole food recipes that are 100% plant-based, and is complete with weekly meal planners, shopping lists and advice on how to achieve a zero-waste lifestyle. Launched on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and on World Book Day, it seeks to inspire more individuals to change what’s on their plate in order to make a difference for the planet.

Scientists have long called for a global shift to plant-based diets in order to combat the climate and ecological crisis. From contributing 18% of total greenhouse gas emissions to driving mass biodiversity loss, deforestation and water pollution, animal agriculture is one of the most environmentally unfriendly industries, using up 45% of the world’s land and 23% of the world’s water. Choosing to consume vegan foods is therefore one of the most impactful actions consumers can take to save the planet, not to mention far healthier, according to an Oxford study.

Dias, a longtime nutrition coach and vegan chef who also runs a wellness consultancy, added that “With the launch of the world’s first 28-Day Whole Foods Plant-Based & Low Waste Meal Plan, I’m hoping to inspire people to make ethical and conscious choices so together we can make a major difference to our home, our health and our planet.”

But while most vegan recipe guides and meal plans do help people transition into a lower carbon diet, many fail to miss other environmental aspects of our everyday habits that go side-by-side with our food choices. Take plastic packaging, which engulfs a number of everyday food ingredients, for instance, and is itself itself a major contributor to ocean plastic waste that harms marine life, but also requires fossil fuels to manufacture. If we continue to pollute our world with plastic the way we do now, oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050, experts predict. 

“I am an avid cook. I read lots of recipe blogs and books but I am also incredibly passionate about living my low waste lifestyle. I could never find any meal plans or recipes that had considered a zero waste grocery shopping philosophy,” explains Figueiras.

By providing readers with a meal plan that takes into account packaging of ingredients, the digital book, which can be downloaded as a paper-free PDF, offers accessible and practical tips to follow to ensure that the minimal amount of waste is produced in addition to the how-to’s of creating healthy, low-carbon and sustainable dishes, from breakfast to lunch and dinner. 

Many of the recipes are Asian-inspired too – it is suited for those in Asia who are looking to try out plant-based eating with a low waste philosophy but are unsure where to start. “Almost all the meal plans out there do not take into account people who shop low waste, meaning avoiding single-use packaging, plastic and unnecessary ingredients. The recipe feature lots of easy substitutions so you can use what you have and not buy just 1 item,” add Figuerias. “Not to mention that most meal plans I came across seemed to be designed for people in the US, the UK or Australia.”

Studies have cited cost and availability as key reasons that prevent consumers in Asia from venturing into the vegan world. Planning ahead is also a great way to avoid creating food waste, another huge issue when it comes to exacerbating greenhouse gas emissions. The book is packed with easy-to-follow suggestions, practical budget-friendly advice and printable shopping lists and meal planners to make it convenient for absolutely everyone to take part in a total reset, for our own health and for the planet’s.
