Looking for some climate change-themed content to watch during Earth Month? Netflix has a whole collection to choose from.
Dubbed One World, Infinite Wonder, Netflix’s Earth Month collection features more than 170 films, specials, series, and shorts, about the environment and climate change. The category includes documentaries, dramas, and stand-up sets, as well as artwork from California-based illustrator Leonardo Santamaria.
One World, Infinite Wonder
“This collection reflects the fragility of our planet,” Netflix Sustainability Officer Emma Stewart, Ph.D., said in a statement, “but also how we can help it heal.”
Don’t Look Up, the 2021 Oscar-nominated dark comedy directed by Adam McKay is the leading streaming platform’s second-most viewed film of all time. The star-studded film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep takes a veiled approach to addressing human-caused climate change using a comet headed for the planet as a metaphor in order to underscore the urgency of the situation.
But that’s not the platform’s only film that climate-aware viewers may want to watch this month. And with Earth Day just ahead, the options are plentiful, including the new five-part documentary series, Our Great National Parks, narrated by former President Barack Obama. Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Waffles + Mochi kids series focused on healthy eating is also featured in the collection.
The feature films include Don’t Look Up, Okja, Frontera Verde, and Ragnarok as well as documentaries led by renowned naturalist David Attenborough.
Netflix climate commitments
Netflix has not been shy about its climate commitments. It recently released its 2021 ESG report detailing its progress and targets. While its emissions increased by 46 percent in 2021—a byproduct of production returning as covid quarantines eased—the platform says it’s on track to meet its targets, including reductions and offsets to tackle its Scope 3 emissions.
“Working with our utilities, landlords, and streaming partners to switch to renewable electricity; swapping in batteries, renewable diesel, and electric vehicles on our productions; and buying sustainable aviation fuel all helped contribute to this reduction,” Stewart said. “The 2030 carbon reduction roadmap in our report charts how we plan to deliver our climate goals in more detail.”
