Healthier Comforts Rolls Out Animal-Free Egg White Protein Powder with The Every Company

Healthier Comforts has rolled out an animal-free egg white protein powder in the US, which features The Every Company’s precision-fermented OvoPro ingredient, the company has confirmed to Green Queen.

Armed with the third-largest investment round for alternative protein last year, The Every Company’s recombinant egg white protein, OvoPro, can now be found across the US.

“OvoPro now has a presence as an ingredient in products sold at Walmart, Target, Amazon, as well as a growing number of regional bakeries,” co-founder and CEO Arturo Elizondo tells Green Queen.

Many of the precision fermentation pioneer’s customers keep the supply relationship confidential to maintain a competitive advantage. But The Every Co has confirmed that its OvoPro is the sole ingredient in a new animal-free protein powder launched by Michigan-based Healthier Comforts.

“Healthier Comforts’s Animal-Free Egg White Protein Powder is 100% OvoPro, proudly marketed and distributed to consumers under the Healthier Comforts brand, bringing EVERY’s breakthrough ingredient directly to consumers,” says Aaron Vander Heyden, who founded the better-for-you brand in 2020.

The product was born out of a meeting between Heyden and The Every Co’s team at a trade show last year. “They were excited about the potential to revolutionise at-home vegan baking and cooking using EVERY’s precision fermented egg white protein powder,” explains Corinn Williams, product marketing director at The Every Co.

“We are thrilled to partner with them as the first to market with Animal-Free Egg White Protein in a pantry-friendly format,” she adds.

Why The Every Company turned into an ingredient supplier

Precision fermentation involves inserting a DNA sequence into microbes to teach them to produce specific molecules when fermented – in The Every Co’s case, these include proteins conventionally found in chicken eggs.

The company’s OvoPro ingredient can replace egg whites’ functionality in a range of applications, and OvoBoost is a highly soluble, taste- and texture-neutral protein equivalent to glycoprotein. In addition, it has developed an animal-free pepsin that acts as a digestive protein. Each has been approved for sale by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The firm has been focusing on OvoPro to tackle the egg shortage and rising prices in the US (in some states, a single egg set Americans back $1), pivoting its business model to become a B2B supplier.

“Since scaling up, we’ve shifted from being a ‘food tech startup’, commercialising our products through high-visibility, co-branded limited-time offerings, to now becoming a true ingredient supplier, providing our customers with solutions that help enable products for their end consumers,” Williams outlines.

The initial partnerships were an effort to get the word out about the brand, and demonstrate its proteins’ functionality in a range of applications, from smoothies and hard juices to matcha, and meat alternatives. “Now that we’ve done that, we can keep our focus on continuing to supply a consistently available, consistently priced, highly functional alternative to conventional egg white ingredients,” she says.

It’s why you can’t find any mention of The Every Co or its ingredient on the packaging of products like Healthier Comforts’s protein powder – yet.

From the early feedback post-launch, Healthier Comforts found that vegan consumers prioritise supplier transparency. “As a result, updates will be made to their website and Amazon listing that note that the product is sourced from The Every Company,” says Williams. “We are happy to take our customers’ leads on how they want to showcase our brand or not in their launches.”

Williams notes how it was Heyden’s vision to market and sell OvoPro as an at-home vegan baking solution. “We’ve simply helped enable that consumer product,” she says.

“Ultimately, our goal is to supply food companies with an ingredient that helps enable the innovative products that their consumers are looking for.

One of the major draws for egg alternatives is the cost advantage, but Healthier Comforts’s animal-free powder is priced slightly higher (equivalent to $3 per oz) than its conventional egg white powder ($2.85 per oz). It’s far more expensive than the brand’s pea protein powder ($1.36 per oz).

Williams explains that Healthier Comforts determines the pricing of its products, based on its evaluation of the marketplace, consumer feedback, and its own margin considerations: “They have priced their Animal-Free Egg White Protein Powder at a competitive price against their conventional egg white protein powder.”

While the precision-fermented version is slightly higher, it also outperforms the incumbent on several nutritional fronts. The OvoPro powder contains 9g of complete protein and 3% of your daily recommended intake of fibre per 10g serving, compared to 8g of protein and zero fibre for the chicken-derived egg white powder.

The animal-free product can be used in an array of applications. Consumers can whip it up like egg whites to make meringues, fold it into pancakes, or blend it into shakes and smoothies for a protein boost.

“Early consumer responses to the price have been largely positive, citing the small amount of product needed to replace a chicken egg white (just one tablespoon, meaning one bag equals 45 egg whites) and the product’s high degree of functionality and versatility (compared to other egg replacers),” notes Williams.

The Every Co eyes capacity and product expansion in 2026

In 2024, The Every Co teamed up with Landish Foods to co-launch Fermy, a brand that sold protein coffee and matcha mixes. And last year, it unveiled a sugar-free protein syrup under a new white-label brand called Dash.

Those brands are now on the back burner. “At this time, we are focused on our role as an ingredient supplier and solutions partner helping our customers better serve consumers. We follow our customers’ leads on if and how they want to showcase our brand,” says Williams.

The company is in the middle of a legal dispute over intellectual property with fellow precision-fermented egg protein startup Onego Bio, with which it was discussing a merger before talks fell apart. In response, The Every Co called the Finnish firm’s attempt “desperate” and “baseless”. The case is ongoing.

Looking forward, The Every Co is looking to “grow our relationships with existing customers and onboard new ones”, with a “broader focus” on increasing production capacity to meet that customer demand, according to Elizondo, its CEO.

The firm is producing several metric tonnes of its product with a European co-manufacturer, and has doubled its 2025 capacity, with plans to further double it again next year. It has additionally partnered with Dutch animal-free dairy startup Vivici and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to explore setting up an industrial-scale precision fermentation facility with a four-million-litre capacity.

Its plans to scale up further were boosted by a $55M Series D funding round in December, which took its total financing to $288M to date.

“In 2026, our team is focused on expanding OvoPro’s presence in more products to help customers futureproof and simplify their supply chains, meet their cage-free commitments, stabilise their costs, and improve their products,” says Elizondo.
