Active in 181 countries, Veggly, a global dating app for vegans and vegetarians recently celebrated a million matches on its platform, a 12x growth in just 18 months.
Founder Alex Felipelli worked on Veggly for six months before he launched it in October 2018 and by mid-2019, the app’s user base had grown to about 20,000 people.
Apart from generating one million ‘Veg-matches’ (the company’s term for when two users match with each other), the platform has reached over 300,000 users from around the world. This is a significant increase: the app’s user statistics have grown by a factor of 12, from 25,000 users back in June 2019 until today.
In a recent poll by Veggly, which surveyed over 7,400 people from across the globe, over half of vegan daters said they would refuse to date meat-eaters with one in eight vegan daters refusing to date even a vegetarian.
In an interview with Plant Based News, Felipelli shared that vegans and vegetarians prefer to date like-minded individuals. “These findings help us understand why Veggly has become so popular. Many vegans want to be with someone who shares their values and love of animals. For many vegans, their ‘veganism’ is a way of life, so it’s understandable they wouldn’t want to be with a partner that consumes animals or animal products.”
With the app, users can create a profile and ‘like’ the people they see on the main page with filters such as age and distance. When the person likes you back, users receive a ‘Veg Match’, which allows the two to start a conversation.
Veggly also recently revealed that the U.S has the highest number of Veggly users in one country, with 47,823 with Brazil (46,620 users) as a close second, followed by Germany (39,703 users), the U.K (35,190 users) and Spain with 14,136 users.
In a press release seen by Green Queen, Felipelli, highlighted that the growth of users is due to the increasing number of vegans in the world. “The growth we’ve seen is incredible! As veganism continues to surge in popularity across the world, so does the demand for herbivorous dating and relationships. So many of us want to be with someone who shares the same values and love for animals, so it’s no surprise we have hit the 300,000 user mark so quickly. This milestone will strengthen our commitment helping this community grow as much as possible. Especially as it was Valentine’s Day last week, we will do our best to make sure every herbivore on our app finds their ‘Veglentine’ this year.”

To celebrate this achievement, Veggly has launched two new initiatives one of which is ‘Veg-Match Success Stories’ that will include a series of blog posts sharing success stories of couples who met on Veggly. The other initiative is the introduction of free ‘Veglentine’ coins (credits) that will be given to new as well as existing users.
According to the app’s data, 53% of users are female and 47% are male with more than half of its base 100% animal-free as 58% of its users identify as vegan, while 28% are vegetarian and 14% say they are ‘in transition.’ Similar to other mainstream dating apps, the most active age group on Veggly is between 25-34 years old.
Available in languages like English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, Italian, Danish, and Polish, the app is available to download on iOS and Android. Going forward, Veggly predicts that the app will help create 2 million ‘Veg-matches’ by mid-2021. In addtion, the team is planning on launching a section on the app where people can network and meet other fellow vegans.
A YouGov study, commissioned by supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, found that different dietary preferences were the second biggest undesirable trait after opposing political views when it comes to dating, with research showing that 41% of Brits would not be interested in a potential partner if they list themselves as ‘vegan’ on their online dating profile.
However as more and more people are expressing interest in veganism, this preference may change in the near future.
