Unlike Silicon Valley-based food tech startups that have predominantly focused on plant-based beef products, Hong Kong’s very own startup Omnipork has developed a vegan alternative for pork – Asia’s most consumed meat. Made with only plant ingredients – a combination of shiitake mushrooms, peas, non-GMO soy and rice – Omnipork is a minced pork analag that comes at a fraction of the environmental footprint and while boasting similar levels of protein and no cholesterol. Available for retail across Green Common stores in Hong Kong so you can creatively cook up your favourite pork-based dishes at home, it is also widely offered in many of Hong Kong’s restaurants (over 200 in fact!) – including some surprising ones! If you’re wondering where you can get your hands on the best Omnipork dishes, whether it is Chinese, Thai or Mexican cuisine, here is our roundup of the best in the city.
Yes, you heard it right! Omnipork has partnered up with iconic Hong Kong cha chaan teng chain Tsui Wah to recreate the city’s classic dishes. Across all 28 branches in the city, plant-based folk can now enjoy cult favourites with a meat-free spin, including the Omnipork Bolognese with Rice and the Baked Omnipork Bolognese Spaghetti. If you’re vegan, make sure you ask for the version without egg and cheese!

MiMiDi 麵麵店 is a Cantonese noodle shop chain that sells Hong Kong’s classic side-street “cart noodle” soup. Here, you can indulge in an authentically local casual fast food meal – Omnipork style! In addition to Omnipork meat ball noodles in a mushroom-based soup, you can try their take on soup dumplings made with the pork analogue.

Vegan hotpot anyone? If you’ve been missing out on the fun experience of hotpot for the last few winters because of the lack of plant-based options, your prayers have been answered! The local go-to spot for hotpot dinners, Megan’s Kitchen has just added Omnipork to their menu, such as Omnipork & Vegetable meatballs, so vegans can still join in the fun.

When Dragon-i launched a dedicated vegan menu, all of Hong Kong’s herbivores rejoiced! If you thought the pork alternative could only be dished up in Chinese restaurants, you’re wrong. Mexican restaurant Verde Mar offers an entirely vegan all-day menu featuring Omnipork nachos, tacos, quesadillas, burritos and bowls. Plus, you can pair your Omnipork dish with their special avocado fries and chargrilled cactus! Taco Tuesday, anyone?

One Harbour Road
One Harbour Road is the in-house restaurant of Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, with Omnipork offerings that even meat lovers would enjoy. From classic Omnipork steamed dumplings to stir-fried lotus root with Omnipork, you can taste some of the best Chinese dishes with the plant-based alternative at this award-winning restaurant. Green Queen recommends their Omnipork stone bowl beetroot rice, which is served with morel mushrooms, yellow fungus and water chestnut.

Lovers of Korean food can stuff their faces with vegan-friendly Tsim Sha Tsui favourite Joomak. During their all-you-can-eat veggie Mondays, diners can enjoy a full 90-minute session full of delicious Omnipork dishes. While the menu isn’t entirely Omnipork based, they do have a good selection, including vegan Grilled Omnipork Patty Wrap and Omnipork Kimchi Fried Rice.

It would be remiss not to mention the restaurant by the group behind Omnipork, Green Monday’s flagship vegan eatery Kind Kitchen. They serve up Asian classics with the pork analogue, such as Omnipork Tan Tan Noodles, Omnipork Gyozas and Omnipork Banh Mi, plus they do a mean Omnipork Spaghetti Bolognese.

Tai Tai Pie Pies
Hong Kong’s veteran pie makers Tai Tai Pie Pies recently welcomed a new plant-based addition to their pie menu: Omnipork Italian Sausage Roll. The roll is made out of vegan dough too, making it vegan-friendly and suitable for those who are lactose-intolerant. According to reviews, it tastes incredibly similar to the “real” thing – but of course, without the carbon footprint!

King Of Sheng Jian
King Of Sheng Jian is famous for its Shanghainese buns, and has 4 locations across the city. When the chain launched a variety of Omnipork dishes on its menu, it caused quite a stir in the city’s plant-based community and has even managed to fool a few meat eaters out there! Recommended must-trys include their Omnipork san jin bao (pan-fried pork bun) and Omnipork dan dan been (noodles)- plus it’s unbeatable value – HKD

Yes, it’s true. Fairwood has jumped on the fast food chain bandwagon in Hong Kong to serve the city their take on Omnipork. Fairwood is a canteen giant in the city, and has long been central to the casual food scene in Hong Kong’s culture. If you’re craving a Cantonese classic sans meat, try their Minced Omnipork and Tofu on Red Rice alongside an iced lemon tea. Plus: you can swap out the rice for spaghetti if you’re team noodles.

Local coffee shop and café concept Sensory ZERO, which has multiple locations across the city and is often hidden within bookstores has recently added the plant-based pork to their menu. Visitors have reported that their take on a pork patty on rice – Omnipork Patty Rice with Onsen Egg – is seriously comforting and worth a try. Vegans can ask for the egg-less version to make the dish 100% plant-based.

Thanks to Green Queen’s UN SDG #PlantBased Dinner Series, the first of which was hosted at Hong Kong’s original pan-Latin restaurant Picada, the restaurant now serves up a fully plant-based vegan menu every Monday. Some of their vegan-friendly dishes are available a la carte as well, including their take on Omnipork: Vegan Omnipork Pastel with Creamy Sweetcorn Humita.
